Public transport is OK in Europe, most people in Europe will take a city bus or a train without any doubt.
I have not been in Rome myself so I can not help you in finding your bus there, but in general, at main railway stations and airports there are either uniformed staff or people in a special booth who are there to help you finding your way around. In case of doubt you can always ask one of them.
And most hostel have travel info on their site. Google maps does local bus info in some main cities and guide books, like Lonely Planet often mention how to travel to town from the main airports and train stations (if those are not in the center of town as often the case.) If you know that information before you arrive in town you will be much less confused about the buses.

Pack light, in September in Rome you need summer clothes or jeans, T-shirts and a sweater.
If you travel farther north you may want to buy an other sweater locally, that makes a nice souvenir as well.

Backpacking Europe Summer 2009?

I'm planning to backpack around Europe next summer from mid June until mid August 2009. I think I will use eurail and get a 5 country pass for 15 days travel in 2 months.
Can anyone tell me if eurail and other things like it are worth the convenience or if I should just buy tickets as I travel?
I would also appreciate any advice on the whole thing, overall prices, hostels, how easy it is to get night trains, anything.
I've never traveled in this way before, I want to go to mainly large cities through France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and wherever I travel through in between.
I'm currently traveling alone but I think I can probably convince a friend or two to accompany me for at least some of it.

I just backpacked thru Europe for 6 weeks and visited nine countries. I didn't get a eurail pass as I didn't know where I was going etc. It was easy to book trains through eastern Europe on the day. Also trains can be expensive so in some countries I just went thru the bus company www.eurolines.com its really cheap. Ive heard bad things about the night trains where people get robbed so I probably wouldn't do that alone.
If you don't find anyone to go with or your scared at going alone I would recommend have a look at gumtree travel partners. There are tonnes of people on there looking for people to travel around with. I found a few people, plus you will always meet heaps of people at your hostels. Its easier to meet people when your travelling alone as well. Anyways good luck.
